Course Outline:

‘Social’ has become an integral part of search. Companies use social and professional networks to market their services and stay in touch with existing and potential customers. Conference highlights, presentations and videos are shared across multiple platforms. Researchers use social media to discuss, promote and share their work. And many people use their connections to share information and ask questions. Google and Bing include social media in their results but do not cover everything so knowing where to look is vital. This workshop will look at the impact of social and professional networks on search and the specialist tools that are available. Topics covered will include:

Why ‘social’ is an important part of search
How organisations and individuals are using social and professional networks to publish and share information, and the implications for the searcher
The different types of information including research, business, news, video, images, presentations, discussions, social bookmarking
Searching for people
The networks and services you need to consider and how to search them
Specialist tools for social search
Confidentiality and ethical issues
Quality issues

You will have ample opportunity to experiment and try out the techniques for yourself and Karen will be on hand to help and advise you. Exercises are provided but you are free to explore and try out searches of your own.

Karen Blakeman has worked in the information profession since 1978 and became a freelance consultant in 1989. She provides training and consultancy on social and collaborative web tools, and searching for and managing information resources. She is an Honorary Fellow of CILIP (Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals) and a member of the Association of Independent Information Professionals (AIIP).

David Ball

David Ball is a consultant specialising in scholarly publishing, e-books, virtual learning environments, design and management of academic libraries. His current projects include research in the area of open access publishing for the Public Library of Science (PLOS) and the Berlin-Brandenburgische Akademie der Wissenschaften.

As University Librarian and Head of Academic Development Services at Bournemouth University from 1994 to 2012, he created a vibrant library service, winning two major national awards: in 2007 the prestigious quinquennial SCONUL Library Design Award, and in 2009 the Times Higher Education Leadership and Management Awards for Outstanding Library Team.

There is a lot of interest in ‘digital workplaces’ as a potential vision for not only how organisations can work more efficiently and effectively but also build stronger digital working relationships with other organisations, for example in the support of open innovation. This course will set out the characteristics of a digital workplace, provide an overview of some of the enabling technologies (cloud computing, mobile and collaboration) and then focus in on organisational challenges that need to be addressed in developing a digital workplace environment.

There is an increasing understanding that data collected during research needs to be managed more carefully. It is in researchers’ own interests to do so, and increasingly funders also mandate data planning. The scale, diversity and fragility of digital data make this challenging. Universities are beginning to develop a support infrastructure that will help improve research data management. Some libraries are already beginning to play a key role in defining and delivering this infrastructure.

The course encompasses the skills require by librarians and information professionals to support all stages of the research process, offering an introduction to Research Data Management (RDM) and the role of librarians and information professionals.

Andrew Cox is a senior lecturer at the Information School, University of Sheffield and led the RDMRose Project. His research interests include virtual community, social media and library responses to technology. He is the School’s Director of Learning and Teaching. He coordinates Sheffield’s MSc in Digital Library Management.

Eddy Verbaan is a Research Associate at the Information School, The University of Sheffield. He has a PhD in history and an MSc in Digital Library Management.

In most organisations website search and enterprise search applications are managed on an ad hoc basis, with limited staff and budget resources and no clear objectives other than “We want it to be as good as Google!”. As with any corporate resource, search objectives and resources need to be set out in a strategy document that also reflects the relationship between content quality and search quality.

The course will be a mixture of presentations and group work to enable delegates to return to their organisations with a detailed template for a corporate search strategy that will cover:
